Young Frankenstein - Mel Brooks' New Musical
June 26th 2007 07:18
After six years the musical The Producers finally closed on Broadway following a sensational run, packed houses and a succession of stars and rave reviews. Producer, composer, writer - Oscar winning film-maker and actor - Mel Brooks, closed the show with flair... by announcing his next planned production!
Following The Producers - his most critically acclaimed picture - Young Frankenstein has to rank as Brooks' movie masterpiece par excellence. So naturally he plans to bring it to Broadway. The show has been extensively workshopped since late last year, with Broadway and TV/Movie stars Kristin Chenoweth and Megan Mullally, as well as original Young Frankenstein cast member and veteran Oscar winning actress Cloris Leachman, participating in the work.
Casting has been announced for the shows World Premiere in Seattle this August. It will include The Producers alum Roger Bart (who Australian audiences will remember from his turn as soft-spoken, spooky Pharmacist from season two of Desperate Housewives) as Doctor Frederick Frankenstein, Megan Mullally (of Will & Grace multi-Emmy winning fame), as well as Tony award winners Sutton Foster and Adrea Martin.
A great deal is expected of this show given the illustrious and highly commercially (and critically) successful nature of its predecessor. However, while the pressure may be on, given the talented nature of the cast and the brilliance of the original movie... it shouldn't have much of a struggle being brilliant!
