It seems like just about every Generation Y obsession, from The Simpsons to Harry Potter to Twilight, has been turned into a Hollywood film. There's even a facebook movie rumoured to be in pre-production. So it comes as no surprise to hear that Spiderman director Sam Raimi has been signed on to bring the hugely popular online fantasy game World of Warcraft to the big screen.
Raimi, who rose to fame as the director of the Evil Dead series, is said to be excited at the prospect of bringing the battle between the Horde and the Alliance into the mainstream. "At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," the director told journalists. And it seems this sci-fi obsession - playfully nicknamed 'Warcrack' by those who have experienced the game's addictive potential - is not going to be just for nerds for much longer. Virtually every one of Raimi's movies since the mid-90s has reached blockbuster status, so it is expected that the Warcraft movie will do the same.
Raimi will be working on the film in conjunction with The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven, and is said to be beginning production next year, once he has completed filming the upcoming Spiderman 4 movie.
