Who will be the next Catwoman?

September 24th 2009 23:36
Even though there isn't even a script in the works for the inevitable return of Batman's most enduring love interest, several actresses have already expressed their desire to play the role of Catwoman when she next features in the Batman movie series. First there was Angelina Jolie, then Ashley Judd, last month it was Megan Fox and now it's Charlize Theron. "I think what has happened to that franchise is amazing," Theron told journalists. "I would be an idiot to not consider that part."

There's something about that PVC catsuit that cements the status of an actress as a superstar. After being played by Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether and Julie Newmar in the 1960s TV series, it was Michelle Pfeiffer who brought her to the big screen and consequently became the geeky guy's sex symbol. Halle Berry tried and failed to make Catwoman work in 2004 - sure, she looked hot, but when the character is only loosely based on the comic book caricature that so many people know and love, you're sure to be putting noses out of joint. So while it was understandable that Berry's Catwoman was a complete and total box office flop, it is anticipated that when Catwoman returns in the next Chris Nolan-directed version of the Batman series, she's going to become a major part of the popular culture once again.

That being said, there is yet to be a script written, let alone a production team assembled or a title given to the project - but rumours have already begun to circulate among Hollywood's biggest players. The latest one is that the Batman movie featuring Catwoman is to be in cinemas by late 2011, which means that those casting directors better get a move on!

Personally, I think that the best Catwoman would be the fabulous Miss Jolie. Julie Newmar agrees, saying that Angelina would be the ideal choice for the most feline of femme fatales. The 74-year-old original Catwoman said last year, "Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me she has already made enquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman's one true love."

But Ange is not everyone's cup of tea... some would prefer the youthful beauty of Megan Fox, the down-to-Earth tenacity of Ashley Judd, or the considerable acting skill of Charlize Theron. Only time will tell as to who eventually scores the role - for all we know, it could be a totally unexpected actress, or even a newcomer.

So who do you think would make the ideal Catwoman, and why?

Hi Michelle,

Nicely written report.

My Vote goes for a matured Catwoman in the form of Monica Belluci.

Carrie Anne Moss could pull of the whole Vixen or is that Feline part. She has worked well with Nolan in the past. (Memento.)

If i go young then Evan Rachel Wood (Pretty Persuasions)or Eva Green (Casino Royale) seem to be immediate maybes?

An unlikely bombshell would be an interesting Direction to cast in.

Monica Belluci and Eva Green would both be excellent in this role, I agree. Carrie Anne Moss has aged quite a bit since her Memento and Matrix days... she played Shia LaBeouf's character's mother in Disturbia and didn't seem out of place, so perhaps her Catwoman would be a bit long in the tooth. Evan Rachel Wood, maybe.... she's got talent but I don't know if she's sexy enough.... would be interesting to see though! I agree that the 'unlikely bombshell' could work but I suspect they'll go for someone high profile. But who knows! Cheers for the comment JD

I heard Charlize has snared the role.
Eva Mendes would be my choice. But perhaps too similar to Halle Berry's latin-flavoured portrayal ..?

Yep a couple of sites have reported that Charlize got it, but they're not credible....... will blog the news as soon as People, Parade or Variety confirms it.

Monica Belucci all the way for that role...Angelina would have fit it a few years ago- but she hasoften played femme fetales and it is more interesting to see her in other roles. Ashley Judd and Charlize are gorgeous and multi-talented but somehow not who I would picture as embodying Selina Kyle
I think an unknown would be a very interesting choice. Someone with the acting skills of a hollywood goddess and the looks of Ava Gardner.
as far as younger actresses go and possibilities: Marion Cotillard, Sendi Bar, Rachel Weisz
Really Long Link
even Eliza Dushku

If they were going to go the Latin route, my vote would be for Michelle Rodriguez. She's beautiful and can def kick some ass. I really doubt that would happen. I'm sure they're going to go for a big name.
I wish Catherine Zeta Jones were a candidate. She would look amazing in the suit and is a great actress.
All I know, is that I don't want Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie anywhere near that cat suit.

Didn't see that coming - it's Anne Hathaway! (here's the report from people.com).

Thinking about it though, she'll probably be pretty amazing in this role - she's a talented girl and she's got the right look for it too.
