What are you playing at, Joaquin?

First it was the apparent rejection of Hollywood to become a rapper. Then it was the crazy hair and beard, followed by a completely bizarre interview on David Letterman's The Late Show where he responded to all questions with grunts and monosyllabic answers. Now comes the suggestion that Joaquin Pheonix's oddball transformation is, in fact, just one big, and incredibly subtle, hoax.
An Aussie filmmaker who worked with Phoenix on Buffalo Soldiers is the latest to report that his apparent defection from Hollywood is just a joke - and social commentary. "Joaquin is very smart," said film director Gregor Jordan. "This is very conscious. He has a huge degree of control."
"It's pretty hilarious stuff... It's so subtle, I said 'people who don't know you are going to think this is real.'"
Indeed, Phoenix's recent behaviour has even led some to believe that the actor, who has battled with addiction in the past, may be suffering a relapse. Others in the industry, including Ben Stiller, have performed parodies of his strange behaviour.
Phoenix's brother-in-law and fellow actor Casey Affleck has been trailing the Walk the Line star with a video camera for months, apparently to document his transformation from respected actor to burgeoning rapper, but it is now believed that the pair are working on a Borat-style project, with the intention of using the mass media as a means of duping us all.
Phoenix has denied that his career move is a hoax, but personally, I think that that's exactly what it is. What do you think?
