'The Simpsons' to get the axe
October 9th 2011 14:39
Sad news for Simpsons fans... after more than two decades and 488 episodes, the iconic TV show looks to be on its last legs. According to Fox executives, the show is no longer profitable as a first-run series and as such will probably come to a close sometime in 2012.
The voice actors - who reportedly make between $440,000 and $500,000 per episode, each - are facing massive pay cuts for the final season. The producers of the show have already taken big pay cuts themselves in order to keep the show on the air, but to no avail; the show is likely to finish up either at the end of this season or the next.
A representative of the Fox network released this statement about the show's financial situation last week:
"23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world. We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model."
Of course, the re-runs will undoubtedly continue for many years to come, and the show has been well and truly established into the pop culture of our time... but nonetheless, it's truly a sad day when such an awesome series gets axed in the name of $$$.
