The Diva Battle of ALL TIME!!!!!
June 28th 2007 02:35
When soul singer Jennifer Holliday first hit Broadway in 1981 as Effie White in the musical Dreamgirls, her rendition of the song "And I Am Telling You" left audiences reeling. It was literally like nothing anyone had ever seen before! It went down in legend and was immortalised with a Tony Award for Best Actress.
When Jennifer Hudson beat out literally hundreds of budding young hopefuls and won the part of Effie in the 2006 movie musical Dreamgirls, fans uncounted held their breaths and snatched up the song the second it became available on the net. It was pirated of course, but a legend was at stake. Naturally she nailed it and took home a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award, a BAFTA and an Oscar for her efforts.
However, there was just one thing wrong.
LaHolliday, the diva of all diva's, was nowhere to be seen.
She later came out swinging, angry not to have been offered so much as a cameo in the movie. JHud did her best to compensate by snatching out a quick "thank you" to the diva at the very close of her Oscar speech... it just didn't seem like enough.
Finally, finally, finally, it seems JHoll gets her dues from JHud and the producers of Dreamgirls. At last nights BET Awards, celebrating achievement by black artists in the realms of film and music, the two Jennifer's got together and to the delight of the audience they performed a duet of "their" number and it was a triumph!
Check it out!
Hudson began the song, stopping after the first verse to introduce "my Dreamgirl, the real Dreamgirl, Miss Jennifer Holliday!" That set the tone for the entire song. For six minutes two of the biggest diva's the world has ever seen battlled it out with their gargantuan voices and yet still managed to finish in each others arms!
JHud was the very image of politeness, deferring to the stateswoman of soul, Holliday, at every turn with obvious awe and respect. She quickly won LaHolliday over. This situation did not stop either diva from belting the hell out of "their" song and obviously competing for vocal superiority.
Frankly it depends on which diva happens to be your favourite as to who came out on top. To my eye they both blew the song away and delivered a triumphant performance that will not long be forgotten. Hopefully a recording will follow and this magical performance will not go the way of Whitney Houston's rendition of the same song and end up as just a hideously grainy video on YouTube!
