Presently starring in the Broadway musical "Curtains"...
Given the fact that Frasier alum David Hyde-Pierce "came out" this week one would be forgiven the belief that Hollywood is still all-cool with gay rights and so on...
Think again!
The fear of box office poison setting in still rules the roost it would seem, even in this day and age when gay rumours abound and can easily crush careers!
Jodie Foster recently got the tar and feather treatment when the cover of US gay magazine "The Advocate" named her atop its Most Influential Gay People List and stuck her on the cover! The fact that Foster is NOT out by any means was explained away by execs at the magazine who seem to believe that she should be in order to set an example.
R-I-I-I-G-H-T...

Tom's career took a shocking nose dive in the late 90's after gay allegations began. That horrible divorce from Nicole (suspiciously sudden) and that tempestuous relationship with Pene Cruz didn't help. The sudden appearance (literally out of no-where) of Katie Holmes on his arm just was too much and the parodies have flown thick and fast ever since.
The gay rumours that preceded Katie's sudden evolution to the rank of "Mrs Cruise" do have a slick element to them that just begs for suspicion!
Apparantly Tommy boy was caught in bed with now long forgotten B-grade rocker by said rocker's wife - in the act... you know? THAT act!
Well Tom's Publicist (his very own version of Ghostbusters) stepped in and the rockers Wifey got some cool bling, the rocker got to be A-grade for a little while - he memorably told Variety (? - someone mag anyway) that if he really wanted to screw a guy in Hollywood it would have been Brad Pitt!
Apparantly Brad was unhappy with this picture... the poor lamb!!!!!

Tommy got Katie and Katie got famous and one baby later they're both Mr and Mrs Hollywood... well behind Brangelina certainly. They ARE Scientologists after all!!! At any rate they are still ahead of BFF's the Beckhams.
That didn't stop the 2006 Emmy Award Show from screening a parody of the infamous South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet"! Now when Hollywood openly flaunts your gay rumours in your face it's just gotta hurt!

Likewise last year a contestant on the Czech version of Big Brother stated to millions of TV-viewers that while on tour with a band in the US he had made "tender love" to Tom Cruise in a hotel... uh huh.

John Travolta is also an oft quoted closet case.
Um ewww? Who is that guy and why is he kissing John Travolta?
It's not hard to see why.
Former N'Sync-ker Lance Bass came out last year as did Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight after the infamous "gay-bashing" incident on set where Isaih Washington called him a fag!
It is not clear yet just whether the incident and accompanying media storm will cost Washington his career.
You have to wonder at the irony there. That an industry that has destroyed careers due to homophobia could be itself so homophobic is more than just vaguely appalling!
Those stars who do come out seem kind of stained afterwards, as if they're used goods. Either that or their title changes from "actor" to "openly gay actor".
I see a movie along the lines of "Sunset Boulevard" exmaining this issue. And it must be along those lines. Audiences accross America and around the world clearly need to be confronted with this issue.

We at home clearly play a part in Hollywood's homophobic attitude. Would it be harder to see Tom Cruise save the world or play a sex scene with a female co-star if it was a written-in-stone-fact that he was gay?
Or would Foster loose her hot-Mom allure if she came out as a lesbian?
Would Grease loose some of its glitter if Travolta came out?
Will the writers of Grey's Anatomy have to slowly alter Knight's sexuality in upcoming seasons due to public perception of him following his decision to come out?
Now David Hyde Pierce got away with it yes. But you have to remember. He no longer lives off of Hollywood. He's on Broadway now, and on the Great White Way a leading man coming out is otherwise referred to as Tuesday!
At the end of the day it's really none of our business what sexual orientation any of these people have. Perhaps that's the message Hollywood needs to get through it's thick skull?
IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS!!!! Stop trying to make it our business.
