Star on the rise: Isla Fisher

If you've seen The Wedding Crashers, then no doubt you'll remember the beautiful but crazy redhead who seduced Vince Vaughn's character. This is Isla Fisher, and at the age of 32 she's busy making her mark in Hollywood. Since her days growing up on our TV screens as Shannon in Home and Away, Fisher has moved to LA and has film roles coming to her thick and fast.
What many people don't know is that Isla Fisher penned two novels while still a teenager - Bewitched and Seduced by Fame. In 2002 she appeared as Mary Jane in Scooby-Doo, a role that landed her an American agent, and her 2005 role in The Wedding Crashers won her the Breakthrough Performance Award at The MTV Movie Awards. In 2007 she appeared in The Lookout, Wedding Daze and Hot Rod, and this year we've seen her in Definitely, Maybe with Ryan Reynolds and as a voice in Horton Hears a Who. Her next on-screen appearance will be in 2009's Confessions of a Shopaholic, a role that suits her perfectly - " I love shoes and bags!" She says.
The down-to-earth star never really expected movie success, but she's getting it nonetheless. Says Fisher, "I know that a lot of Australians come to the States with those ambitions of really wanting to act, but weirdly enough, I only came out here for the premiere of Scooby Doo, which was when I was offered representation and got a job almost straight away."
It was at this time that Fisher discovered her funny bone with the help of her future husband, Sacha Baron Cohen of Borat and Ali G fame. "It had never crossed my mind to do comedy. It's normally the guys that get to be wacky," she explains. "And the girls just roll their eyes."
In 2007 Fisher gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Olive. "Motherhood is my favourite topic and I never shut up about it in my personal life," says Fisher. "But I really don't want to talk about it. Not publicly. I just think my daughter deserves to be protected," she continues. "There is just so much focus on celebrity now and I just really don't want her to be a part of it."
As for her future, we'll next be seeing Isla Fisher in Confessions of a Shopaholic, due for a 2009 release. "It's so much fun," she says. "I basically get to play a girl that loves to shop so, yeah, it's not exactly hard work."
