Star on the rise: Amy Adams

May 13th 2008 04:50
Sometimes, you come across an actress who should be way more famous than she actually is - and Amy Adams is one of these. She's hoping to change all that though, with several big-budget productions due out this year.

Amy Adams

Born in 1974, Adams was raised in Colorado and had an active interest in singing and dancing from a young age. She had ambitions of becoming a ballerina but gave up on that idea upon realising that "she would never be that good at it, regardless of how hard she worked." Her family moved to Minnesota and she auditioned for what was to become her first film role in 1999's satirical comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous, with Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards.

Following the advice of Kirstie Alley, her co-star in Drop Dead Gorgeous, Adams moved to Hollywood and took a series of roles in small productions like Psycho Beach Party. She also appeared as a guest on episodes of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Charmed and as a voice on King of the Hill. Her role as Brenda Strong in Catch Me If You Can was meant to be her big break, but she was unemployed for a year after that.

Her break came with the 2005 independent film Junebug, for which Adams won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for her performance. She received numerous accolades and critical acclaim for this role, and was later cast in 2007's Enchanted as Giselle, opposite James Marsden and Patrick Dempsey. Enchanted was both a commercial and critical success, with critics calling it a star-making vehicle for Adams the way Mary Poppins was for Julie Andrews.

In 2008, Adams starred in three films: Sunshine Cleaning, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, and Doubt. We'll next be seeing her on the big screen alongside Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia, which is scheduled for a 2009 release. Says Adams, "Right now I'm just doing what I enjoy and I've done some different films, I've done some different types of roles. I've done drama but I enjoy playing upbeat characters, I really do because you take your characters home with you whether you intend to or not."

Don't forget this face - Amy Adams is most certainly a star on the rise.
