Since her hit TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, Sarah Michelle Gellar has been quietly working on her film career. Having appeared in several horror movies (including I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Grudge), the cult classic Cruel Intentions, and the comedy series Scooby-Doo, Gellar was determined to take on interesting roles that didn't typecast her as an actress. Most recently she appeared in Richard Kelly's Southland Tales as Krista Now, a porn star living in a dystopic society, a role that has demonstrated her considerable range and ability.
Born in 1977 in New York City, Sarah Michelle Gellar first began acting at the age of 4, but didn't get her major break until 1992 when she starred in the TV series Swans Crossing and was subsequently cast in the soapie All My Children. It was this role for which Gellar won a daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series, at the age of eighteen.
In 1995 Gellar left All My Children and in 1997 won the lead role in the TV series Buffy The Vamprire Slayer, after several auditions. This was to be her claim to fame, and the series shot to worldwide popularity. Gellar was said to be proud of her character, saying "Being a teen idol is what I've waited for my whole life."
She adds, "Being an actor gives you a chance to play all kinds of roles, very moving and dramatic on one project, silly and girlish on another. That's the most interesting thing out this business, you get to keep reinventing yourself." We'll next be seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar on the big screen in Alice and Possession, which are currently in production.
