One to see: Zack and Miri Make A Porno (2008)

If you're not easily offended and are a fan of Kevin Smith's earlier work (like Chasing Amy, Clerks and Dogma) then there's a good chance that you'll find Zack and Miri Make A Porno both funny and engaging. There are some genuinely hilarious moments in this movie but what really surprised me was how romantic it was! It's definitely the most touching movie that Smith has made, while still maintaining the bawdy gross-out humour that he's become famous for.
The premise is pretty much self-explanatory: Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are two friends struggling to make ends meet. When they attend their 10-year high school reunion, a chance meeting with a gay porn star (brilliantly portrayed by Justin Long) gives Zack the bright idea that to make some money, the two of them should make a porno together. They hire a bunch of sexy misfits (including Smith's favourite, Jason Mewes, and real-life porn star Traci Lords) and begin filming, but when it comes time to shoot their own sex scene, they realise that they might just be more than friends.
The story is totally original but it's the cast that really makes this movie worth watching. Seth Rogen plays his usual role of the easy-going, man-boobed slacker who somehow manages to pull really hot chicks, and Elizabeth Banks is both sweet and a little awkward as Miri. Together they are great to watch; really dynamic and they have a good chemistry. I'd never thought of Jason Mewes as being sexy before, but he really works his role as a male porn star, and Justin Long truly steals the show as the lover of Miri's longtime crush. It's a shame he wasn't featured more.
There are some really graphic and occasionally gruesome moments, but for the most part Zack and Miri Make A Porno is an awesome combination of sexy, funny and sweet. My only complaint is the predictable ending. It's one to rent if you like Kevin Smith's brand of humour and can appreciate the more unusual facets of life.
