One to see: Waitress (2007)

April 22nd 2008 00:03
When it comes to romantic comedies, most Hollywood flicks are predictable and cheesy - I'm the first to admit that. But Waitress is something else entirely. Witty, quirky and sweet, it tells the story of a small-town woman in an unhappy marriage, who lives for making pies. The names of her pies come from the tumultuous events in her life. Sounds strange, but somehow it works.

Waitress

Keri Russell is brilliant in her lead role as Jenna, a character that I immediately warmed to. When she learns she's pregnant to her lowlife husband Earl (Jeremy Sisto), she's not exactly thrilled - she even bakes an "I Don't Want Earl's Baby" pie. It's when she goes to see her gynaecologist that the story takes an interesting turn. Sparks immediately fly between Jenna and Dr Pommater (Nathan Fillion) and the two begin a passionate affair. I won't give away the ending, but it is satisfying and unexpected.

Waitress

The supporting cast is great and includes Adrienne Shelly (who was murdered in her New York apartment shortly after filming ended) and Cheryl Hines as her smart-talking waitress friends. Nathan Fillion is immediately likable as the nervous doctor, and Jeremy Sisto is convincing as Earl, the bane of Jenna's life. Nonetheless, it's Keri Russell that really steals the show with her practised Southern accent and girl-next-door good looks.

Waitress
The unhappy couple

Waitress is for those who are looking for a chick flick with bite. Guys may like the story but it's really targeted at women, who will feel compassion for Jenna's ups and downs as she goes through her first pregnancy and deals with her unhappy marriage. It's an unusual film, to be sure, but it's one that really reaches its audience with its sassy dialogue and well-rounded characters. Worth renting if you're after a romantic comedy with a difference.

I've always liked Keri Russell. Haven't seen this movie yet though. I don't remember it coming out on cinemas but may rent it on DVD.

Aimzster, yeah I don't think it made it to cinemas, being that it was an indie-flick production. Apparently it went really well at last year's Sundance Film Festival though.

It definitely got a (limited) release in Australia. I saw it at the Nova in Carlton. Good film. Was also written and directed by Adrienne Shelly. She died just days before the crew found out it was accepted into Sundance. The little girl in the film is her daughter. The whole thing is really sad.

Hi Ruby, yeah it is sad isn't it? I was shocked to hear she was murdered by hanging. What an awful way to leave the world.

I've never really liked Keri Russell, but I changed my mind after seeing her in this - just as well as cos she's coming up in a lot of movies soon. Jeremy Sisto was thoroughly unlikeable and yet I felt sorry for him - in fact, Waitress was good at blurring the lines and making all those relationships not as clear cut as you'd expect...just like life. It should have gone to the movies it was certainly better than Georgia Rule!

ah Jeremy Sisto is a beautiful man, if you were going to have a lowlife husband he might as well look like Jeremy!

I had this pegged as total dull chick flick, a genre of which I am not fond, but knowing that Jeremy Sisto and Nathan Fillion are in it I may just give it a whirl. I had no idea it was a Sundance film.

Hi Morgan, yes Jeremy is nice to look at, and yet he plays his character so well that the audience despises him.

Cheryl, yeah it's definitely worth a look, I wasn't expecting much either so it was a pleasant surprise. Definitely better than most new DVD releases at the moment.
