First allow to me clarify: Sydney White is one to rent if you're female and under the age of eighteen. Everyone else will probably hate it, but as a PG film it caters to its audience perfectly. Sure, it's formulaic and predictable - it's one of those 'loosely based on a fairytale' flicks, this time Snow White - but it's well acted and frequently engaging, and overall an enjoyable film to watch.
Amanda Bynes stars as Sydney White, a young woman starting college and pledging the Kappa Phi Nu sorority: the same sorority her late mother belonged to. There, she quickly makes friends but stands out from the crowd as fiesty brunette in a room full of blondes. She also quickly makes an enemy in the form of Rachel Witchburn, the president of the sorority, by catching the eye of Rachel's on-again, off-again boyfriend (played by the very gorgeous Matt Long).
Rachel publicly humiliates Sydney by rejecting her from the sorority and she finds refuge with her seven dorky male friends (the whole seven dwarfs theme... you get the idea). I won't give away the ending but it is a satisfying one, with appropriately moral overtones.
Bynes is solid as the lead character; instantly likable because of her happy, goofy presence. The supporting cast are excellent too and Sara Paxton who plays Rachel is a real standout as the girl we love to hate - expect to see more of her in the future.
There are a couple of groan-worthy moments, and the plot is heavily based on outdated stereotypes, but for the most part Sydney White is a fun movie to watch. Definitely one for the girls!
