I'm the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of foreign films, but Priceless is a movie that goes beyond the typical Hollywood parameters. It's the story of a shameless gold-digger, Irene (played by Amelie's Audrey Tautou) and the poor sap who falls in love with her (Jean, played by Gad Elmaleh). Through a case of mistaken identity Irene believes Jean to be a wealthy man, and she leaves her current paramour to be with him before discovering that he is but a lowly bartender. As the film progresses, Jean draws the attention of a wealthy older woman and Irene teaches him the tricks of the gold-digging trade. But in the end, of course, love triumphs over money.
The film is set in the magnificent hotels of the French Riviera, and the lead actors are brilliant. Elmaleh is convincing in his role but it's Tautou who really shines in this film - you can't help but love her character, regardless of how sly and conniving she is. The subtitles are not an issue as the film doesn't feature much heavy dialogue, and though it is a bit predictable at times it never strays into cheesy territory.
Priceless is one to rent if you're looking for a French film that is light and fluffy, but still packs a punch. It's a romantic comedy, but one that shows a side of life of which most audiences are entirely unaware.
