One to miss: Sex and Breakfast (2007)
July 1st 2008 05:56
Despite its enticing title, I found Sex and Breakfast to be one big anti-climax. The blurb on the back of the DVD proclaims it to be "provocative and thought-provoking" while it is, in fact, a very clinical and remarkably boring look at the consequences of group sex.
James (Macaulay Culkin of Home Alone fame) and Heather (Alexis Dziena, who looks disturbingly young) are a couple whose relationship is on the rocks. Heather is having trouble reaching orgasm, and believes the answer to her troubles will be participating in group sex (of course!) James, willing to do anything to keep her, goes along with the plan against his better judgement. Meanwhile, Ellis (Kuno Becker) and Renee (Eliza Dushku) also believe that group sex will save their dying relationship, with Renee being given the freedom to indulge her lesbian fantasies.
After much pointless, bland soul-searching the film predictably culminates with both couples switching partners, in a scene that could have been scorchingly hot but sadly, is not. It's amazing how a subject as fascinating as swinging could be turned into something so bland - the dialogue, the soundtrack, even the cinematography makes this film incredibly boring and nigh on unwatchable.
There are a few okay moments, and the reliable Eliza Dushku - whose character is by far the most likable and believable - makes up for the wooden acting of Culkin and Dziena. But it's Becker's acting that is the worst of the four; it seems he can't even decide whether to keep his Latino accent or not so it drifts in and out, and he appears self-conscious throughout.
Now I understand why it was only given a limited release; I really should have known better but the sexy title and premise got me. Don't make the same mistake!
