One to miss: Good Luck Chuck (2007)

Sometimes, there's a reason why movies go straight to DVD, and Good Luck Chuck is a classic example. A bad script combined with bad acting makes for a very, very bad movie. Here's the synopsis: Charlie (played by Employee of the Month's Dane Cook) is a successful dentist, but a 1985 flashback reveals how he is hexed in love - as in, every woman who he sleeps with marries the next guy she dates. As he's never really loved any of the women he's slept with, this isn't a problem - until, of course, the penguin-obsessed Cam (played by a skeletal Jessica Alba) enters his life. Charlie starts to believe in the hex himself and goes overboard in trying to win Cam's affections, which of course result in pushing her away, but of course everything turns out right in the end and they live happily ever after. Pfft.
One of the most painful parts of this supposedly-funny film is the dialogues between Cam and her brother (played by 30 Rock's Lonny Ross) - they couldn't have made it more stilted and awkward if they tried. His "wacky" pothead antics fall flat as a tack, and his dialogues with Alba don't produce the laughs they intended to. Worst of all, however, are the conversations between Charlie and his breast-obsessed best bud Stu (played by Dan Fogler) - they're gross, sexist and, as one reviewer put it, terminally unfunny.
The film has more than enough gratuitous moments to go around, including several montages of Cook fornicating with various women. All the women in this movie, except for Alba, are portrayed as brainless twits who go after Cook's character with desperation, all trying to sleep with him so they can meet their true love. In the end, the viewer is left bored and dispirited, and to cap this monstrosity off is a scene of Dane Cook performing cunnilingus on a stuffed penguin. Need I say more? Good Luck Chuck is one to avoid - save your money and rent something worth watching.
