Ocean's Thirteen - Danny Ocean is back, the question is why?
June 12th 2007 04:36
Ocean's Eleven opened with an impressive box-office some six years ago now and when the first sequel was announced I don't think there was a sole in Hollywood who was not surprised. The film was the brain child of Director Stephen Soderbergh, hardly known for his commercial attitude to movies.
A sequel just wasn't his style, but two sequels???
Ocean's Twelve did respectably well at the box-office despite being trashed by the critics for the ridiculous nature of its plot - unimaginative compared to its predecessor. It was also racked with scandal after a very pregnant Julia Roberts reportedly caused mayhem on the set with her mood swings!
Well who can blame her? This is (was) an actress who commanded the highest fee of any actress in the world - and she was playing herself!!! Bayud...
Well the announcement of Ocean's Thirteen left everyone gobsmacked. It seemed like pure folly to make a second sequel after the first had flopped with critics AND audiences (and DVD sales proved it!). Surely everyone was over Daniel Ocean (George Clooney) and his long line up of famous co-stars (Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernia Mac, Elliot Gould, Casey Affleck, Carl Reiner, Eddie Jemison, Shaobo Quin, Scott Caan) and could the first story be improved upon?
Rumours racked the production with the addition of actress Ellen Barkin, the removal of both Julia Roberts and Ocean's Twelve star Catherine Zeta-Jones and consistent reports that Brad Pitt's other half Angelina Jolie would be making a surprise cameo.
Well Ocean's Thirteen opened in the US this week to a box-office just slightly less than its predecessors but (to our shock!) with critics raving!
"Complicated as hell but great fun" seems to be the general tone of reviews so far and while audiences in the US have had their summer fill of movies it seems Ocean's Thirteen still had enough pull to commend their presence.
The film opens Australia-wide this Thursday (June 14) and while audiences rushed to see the past two films will the betrayal of the second instalment of this new addition to Hollywood's trilogy collection be too fresh in the minds of audiences?
With Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Spiderman 3 and Zodiac holding steady at the top of the Australian box-office, and Shrek the Third not even in the top ten it must be noted, will Ocean's Thirteen be enough to unseat the Pirates or will it be another Shrek?
The basic storyline of Ocean's Thirteen is that the financier of the original operation with the original eleven - Reuben Tishkoff as played by Elliot Gould - enters into an arrangement with another casino bigwig - Al Pacino joins the A-list line-up in a brilliant casting coup - and is cheated out of co-ownership of a multi-million dollar operation.
Well this angers the rest of the eleven and so they set out to deal with Pacino's villain, dogged all the while by his personal pit-viper - Ellen Barkin in an interesting piece of casting - and former nemesis Terry Benedict - Andy Garcia, but what he's doing back is beyond me!
Oh and look out for Oprah Winfrey's cameo!
Sparks look set to fly, but frankly even though the team is back in Las Vegas can they lick their original show stopper and its breath taking twist?
We find out in two days.

Now the question can only be, if the movie makes a splash at the international box-office will there be an Ocean's 14?
