One to see: The Strangers (2008)

October 21st 2008 01:50
I'd wanted to see this movie for months but my friends were too wussy to see it with me, so when I acquired an advance copy of the DVD I didn't hesistate to whack it on and watch it, alone in the dark. And I tell you what, I was scared. As a horror flick this movie really doesn't disappoint!

One to miss: The Langoliers (1995)

October 1st 2008 05:04
I was all alone on a Saturday night just recently and decided to have a Stephen King movie marathon, with all the old favourites like Misery and The Shining. Some nights you just want to stay in and hibernate. This time I also rented The Langoliers, as the book had given me chills and a friend recommended it. I, however, hated it.

I watched this film for the first time last night, and absolutely LOVED it, so was rather surprised to find that it had received lukewarm reviews. Personally I found it to be both entertaining and informative, though I'm told that historically, it's not entirely accurate. This does not bother me: it's a fascinating tale nonethless, of love, sibling rivalry, attempted incest, and ambition in the court of Henry VIII.

Despite its enticing title, I found Sex and Breakfast to be one big anti-climax. The blurb on the back of the DVD proclaims it to be "provocative and thought-provoking" while it is, in fact, a very clinical and remarkably boring look at the consequences of group sex.

It may not be in the league of Love Actually or Notting Hill, but as far as romantic comedies go, Definitely, Maybe is an enjoyable film that will appeal to women of all ages - and men might even like it too! Starring Ryan Reynolds as Will Hayes, a man in the throes of a divorce, and Abigail Breslin as his inquisitive young daughter Maya, the story begins with Maya wanting to know about the women in Will's life. As Will launches into the history of this life thus far, we discover that there have been three women of significance in his past: his bubbly college sweetheart Emily (Elizabeth Banks), his shockingly bright close friend April (Isla Fisher), and the enigmatic, career-driven Summer (Rachel Weisz).

It's no Monty Python classic but as far as British comedies go, Death at a Funeral is a rollicking good ride. Featuring a top cast including Matthew MacFadyen and Rupert Graves, I found this film to be both original and laugh-out-loud funny.

One to miss: Premonition (2007)

June 24th 2008 04:31
For a movie that is meant to be a thriller, Premonition leaves its audience less than thrilled - in fact, many would be asking for the last two hours of their lives back. Starring Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon, this film is a confusing mess from beginning to end, with so many plot holes that it starts to seem a tad silly.

One to see: Atonement (2007)

As one of the ten people who didn't see this film at the movies - heck, even my parents saw it - I rented the DVD last weekend and absolutely loved it.

One to see: Little Women (1994)

June 13th 2008 02:04
This is one of my all-time favourite films, and it never fails to make me cry. Which is saying something, as when it comes to movies, I'm not a big crier! The fourth film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Little Women is a joy to watch from beginning to end, with strong performances from the whole cast and an underlying theme of female strength and tenacity.

Some movies really make you think, while others will move you. Sadly, The Heartbreak Kid does neither. I had high hopes for this film, being that it was made by the Farrelly Brothers who did There's Something About Mary, but was ultimately disappointed. While there are a few genuinely funny parts, the film has long humourless stretches that can be too much for the audience, expecting a comedy, to deal with.

One to see: Waitress (2007)

April 22nd 2008 00:03
When it comes to romantic comedies, most Hollywood flicks are predictable and cheesy - I'm the first to admit that. But Waitress is something else entirely. Witty, quirky and sweet, it tells the story of a small-town woman in an unhappy marriage, who lives for making pies. The names of her pies come from the tumultuous events in her life. Sounds strange, but somehow it works.

One to see: Priceless (2006)

April 1st 2008 23:23
I'm the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of foreign films, but Priceless is a movie that goes beyond the typical parameters. It's the story of a shameless gold-digger, Irene (played by Amelie's Audrey Tautou) and the poor sap who falls in love with her (Jean, played by Gad Elmaleh). Through a case of mistaken identity Irene believes Jean to be a wealthy man, and she leaves her current paramour to be with him before discovering that he is but a lowly bartender. As the film progresses, Jean draws the attention of a wealthy older woman and Irene teaches him the tricks of the gold-digging trade. But in the end, of course, love triumphs over money.

One to miss: Good Luck Chuck (2007)

March 24th 2008 23:16
Sometimes, there's a reason why movies go straight to DVD, and Good Luck Chuck is a classic example. A bad script combined with bad acting makes for a very, very bad movie. Here's the synopsis: Charlie (played by Employee of the Month's Dane Cook) is a successful dentist, but a 1985 flashback reveals how he is hexed in love - as in, every woman who he sleeps with marries the next guy she dates. As he's never really loved any of the women he's slept with, this isn't a problem - until, of course, the penguin-obsessed Cam (played by a skeletal Jessica Alba) enters his life. Charlie starts to believe in the hex himself and goes overboard in trying to win Cam's affections, which of course result in pushing her away, but of course everything turns out right in the end and they live happily ever after. Pfft.

One to see: Factory Girl (2006)

March 6th 2008 01:21
Revolving around the life of 60’s icon Edie Sedgwick, Factory Girl is a poignant and fascinating portrayal of life in the artistic parts of New York. Sedgwick, played by Sienna Miller, becomes Andy Warhol’s muse and subsequently becomes deeply involved in a world of drugs, art and fame. The story follows Sedgwick’s decline into the seedy side of life as a socialite.
