Movie Marketing or Movie Troubles?
August 15th 2007 03:21
What you are viewing is the second actual picture of cast members of the 2008 release movie musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Okay - fair enough, big deal - right?!
Well... not if you consider that this is the sixth movie in the multi-million dollar Johnny Depp - Tim Burton collaboration and that it is one of the most anticipated movies of the year AND that Oscar buzz is rampant. That and of course, EVERYONE loves Johnny Depp just now. And this could be his best Oscar hopeful yet!
Or could it?
Despite a sublimely arresting poster - unveiled with great fanfare to fans expecting a teaser trailer at the US festival ComicCon - displaying a deliciously sexy Depp as the villainous Sweeney Todd, nothing else has been forthcoming from the production team, except this one picture, revealing leading lady Helena Bonham Carter in character as the diabolical pie making Mrs Lovett.
Are you underwhelmed yet? I am!!!
Despite continual internet buzz and damn near suffocating expectations for a teaser trailer, nothing has been announced by director, Tim Burton.
There are two ways of receiving this news. Either Burton has plans of building this films avid fan base as much as possible and is purposefully teasing them by releasing information and inside looks with an eye-dropper, or, the movie is in trouble, and there really is nothing to look at!
Think back to this time last year and Dreamgirls was in a similar position. The most highly anticipated movie-musical since Chicago, it had teaser trailers, pictures, promotional CD singles and very highly publicised previews bouncing all accross the US. Fans of the hit-Broadway musical were built up into a frenzy and the movie couldn't hit screens fast enough.
Of course it did eventually turn out to be supremely over-rated, but it cannot be denied that the movie's marketing strategy was superb.
Has Burton discovered something better? His movie is due for a limited December release in the US and yet still, just over three months from D-Day, nothing! Two pictures and a whole load of nadda! And yet the fans won't shut up!!!
Inside reports from London - where filming on the production ended in July - claim that Helena Bonham Carter is going to be a revelation in this picture. But nothing about Depp, no buzz beyond the hopeful expectations of fans. And yet... as a musical, Sweeney Todd is known for the complexity of its operatic score. There is every chance in the world that Depp has failed to hit the right heights, and that desperate repair work is underway.
Given that his character IS the movie - let's hope that this is NOT the case. The effects on both Burton and Depp's careers could be catastrophic.
In the meantime - TEASER TRAILER!!! TEASER TRAILER!!! TEASER TRAILER!!!
Early reports claim they will be attached to upcoming Nicole Kidman/Daniel Craig sci-fi flick The Invasion - due for release in Oz Semptember 6. All fingers are crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
