Margot at the Wedding - Nicole Kidman's next hit (we hope)

Check this out!
Remember Nicole Kidman? It's been a while since she's been seen in a movie that really actually was worth seeing. After the mess that was Bewitched, to say nothing of The Stepford Wives *shudders*, the blandness of The Interpreter and the heady pomposity of Birth it's good to see that she may actually be back in a lead worthy of her occassionally brilliant acting chops.
Though some critics have stated that her prosthetic nose worn in The Hours played as much a part in winning her an Oscar as her performance, they clearly forget other screen turns including Moulin Rouge (whether you loved it or hated it, she was GOOD), Cold Mountain, The Portrait of a Lady, Dead Calm, The Human Stain and Dogville.
Nicole can act, and it's more than a question of Aussie pride that makes me say so! We have far better actresses than Nic - see Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette - so there's no reason to brag about her unnecessarily.
Nic's upcoming releases include Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Dianne Arbus (well overdue given it was made early last year!), The Invasion, a modern, high-octane re-working of cult action flick Invasion of the Body Snatchers in which she will star opposite Aussie hottie Daniel Craig, fantasy flick The Golden Compass (in which she plays a very sexy evil witch!) and Margot at the Wedding.
This last title, written and directed by Noah Baumbach (the mind behind Kicking and Screaming and The Squid and the Whale), has garnered Oscar buzz from day one, and a trailer has now been released cementing it as an early Oscars favourite.
Starring Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh (star of Last Exit to Brooklyn and Georgia) as sisters who get along in a very vicious way, Jack Black as Leigh's soon to be husband, John Turturo and Ciaran Hinds, this looks set to be a wildly witty, excruciatingly beautiful movie with real depth and passion - and difference!
The Squid and the Whale is all that is needed to display that Noah Baumbach is a brilliantly different film-maker. No schmaltz here. This is human emotion laid plain, a welcome change up from the "various generations of women go soul-searching" formula that is so popular in Hollywood if not with audiences just now.
This is a performance heavy movie and probably not at all box-office, but it looks fantastic all the same and it seems likely that Nicole is going to be up for a third Best Actress Oscar nomination. Good luck to her! The movie has no fixed Australian release date as yet but it hits America in October - likely means we'll see it February or March 2008.

Film & TV on DVD
I loved the Squid and The Whale, but Nicole Kidman has dragged down so many films for me I doubt I will see this one....(The only thing she ever did I enjoyed was To Die For)
On the positive side, Jennifer Jason Leigh (Kansas City, Last Exit To Brooklyn, Existenz etc) is one of the most talented actresses alive today and I'm sure she will bring some gravity to the piece. John Tuturro is godd value too.
We might have differing tastes, but i dig your posts. Keep up the Good work.
