Just what is Gwyneth Paltrow doing???

August 28th 2007 03:38
I recently posted a cover shoot of Gwyneth Paltrow in W! Magazine looking airbrushed out of existence. Well the entire inside shoot is now online and one has to wonder just what exactly the blonde bombshell was thinking when she allowed them to go to print.
Though gently smoothed over celebrity features on magazine covers are a common feature of the fashion and film worlds today, what Ms Paltrow has sought to do with this her latest photo shoot is beyond ridiculous.

The brief, accompanying article proudly cries that the mother of two was returning from "hiatus" to the silver screen. One could almost hear the horns of triumph sound as Gwyneth is pictured ascending Olympus to reclaim (to much applause) her superstardom - left volunatrily because other more important things come first - natutally!
It is almost possible, whilie reading it, to forget that Gwyneth hasn't had a hit movie since The Talented Mr Ripley in 1999 - a film ironically stolen from her by Cate Blanchett, the actress from whom she arguably stole the Oscar for Best Actress in that same year!
Truth be told, since Ripley, Ms Paltrow has been the lead in a string of critical and commercial flops and has had cameo's in a small collection of arthouse pictures that might have been brilliant but never quite made the cut.

She has two upcoming major releases.
First, The Good Night, has all the hallmarks of a frustrating romantic comedy. In it Paltrow plays the boring, bitchy housewife who drives her husband into the arms of his dream fantasy (Penelope Cruz) - awe inspiring right?
Second, a Marvel Comics action-hero fare called Iron Man sees her play the requisite damsel in distress, to Robert Downey Junior's iron clad hero.
Inspiring stuff - definitely worth having your face distorted beyond the point of recognition! The fact that Ms Paltrow is a magnificently beautiful woman and does not require "updating" is beyond galling! Worse still, she is an actress, not a model, and furthermore a 35 year old mother of two and consequently mature enough to know better.
Certainly her screen acreer is on the verge of drying up and she must be credited for trying to save it. Her Oscar win is now considered a mistake by the vast majority, and other actresses such as Blanchett, Jolie, Kidman and Swank have usurped her position on the silver screen. However, Paltrow's tactics as she attempts to effect her great comeback display a distinct lack of insight into her profession.
Most actresses of taste and quality effect their comebacks with the most non-commercial movie they can find, a vehicle which provides a story that is about their character and, as such, is liable to grab critical if not necessarily commercial attention. They then proceed to give a mass of interviews where they state categorically that having sown their wild oats and made their money they are now only interested in art and youth be damned.
The fact that they then proceed to slowly work their way back up to higher paying box-office fare is beside the point. They have done so with subtlty and hard work.
Paltrow, by comparison is attempting to prove to the world that she is still in her twenties and can hold her own on magazine covers with the likes of Lindsay Loahn and Paris Hilton and still look every bit the youthful bombshell. Bad idea!
It is botched campaigns such as this that separate the stars from the celebrities. Paltrow will no doubt soldier on in Hollywood for decades to come. However, I give it five years before she is headlining a TV show.
