Jessica Alba walks out of her own film

In what is quite possibly the most innovative publicity stunt I've ever heard of, Hollywood star Jessica Alba left the premiere of her latest film The Killer Inside Me before the movie was even half over! It's a step up from her co-stars Kate Hudson and Casey Affleck, however: they didn't show up at all. Doesn't say much for the film... or does it?
The Killer Inside Me is a crime drama with a level of violence that apparently borders on pornography. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, the film is an adaptation of Jim Thompson's graphic novel of the same name, which was originally published in 1952. Alba plays a prostitute who becomes dangerously involved with a psychotic murderer: a quiet and unassuming man who also happens to be the town's deputy sheriff (played by Casey Affleck). Kate Hudson plays the innocent, but increasingly suspicious girlfriend of Affleck's character. Needless to say, a sex fuelled, film noir style of bloodbath later ensues, and it's what had the Sundance premiere's audience cringing in their seats.
According to reports, Alba wasn't the only one who walked out of the film. When challenged by an outraged audience member who berated the festival's organisers for even showing it, director Michael Winterbottom was compelled to defend the film's graphic content. "When you read the book, it's incredibly shocking," he said. "But the violence is supposed to be horrible."
What I don't understand is why the actors would be perfectly willing and able to help create such a disturbing film, and yet can't stomach seeing it on the big screen. If you can't be proud of your work, then why sign on in the first place? Must be one hell of a movie....
