Ingmar Bergman Dead at 89
July 31st 2007 01:43
The film world reeled today with the news that legendary Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman had passed away. He was 89, a cause of death is yet to be announced, old age is the expected answer.
Bergman was most famous for the remarkable character studies and intensely personal and beautiful human relationships and emotions he presented in his films.
Going as far back as the 1950's, when Hollywood would still rarely even allude to sex, he broke boundaries with visually stunning epics that rarely took longer than an hour to say all that was necessary.
Anyone who has seen his work (Smiles of a Summer Night and Wild Strawberries remain his two most infamous films) will rush to attest that the man was genius and that his loss is worthy at the very least of remembrance.
No doubt there will be a biopic somewhere along the line, and hopefully a re-release of his complete works on DVD. Such delightfully warm, uniquely human and astoundingly thought provoking films deserve our attention and respect.
