Avatar: the novel?

February 21st 2010 10:01
Taking a story from the page to the screen is now more popular than ever before, but every now and then someone will switch things around and turn a movie into a book - and that's exactly what legendary Hollywood director James Cameron is doing right now. The commercial and critical success of his 2009 film Avatar has inspired Cameron to transform the amazing visual world of Pandora into the written word, because "there are things you can do in books that you can't do with films," he said at a New York reception earlier this week.

But will it be an effective adaptation? Time will tell.

From the page to the screen

February 12th 2010 12:05
I know I'm not the only one who's noticed that every other movie being made in Hollywood these days seems to be based upon a book. The Lovely Bones, Mao's Last Dancer, Angels and Demons, Disgrace and of course, the Twilight and Harry Potter films are just a few that spring to my mind. Some believe that Hollywood is simply running out of ideas - and this may or may not be true - but often, it's because the best stories are the ones that have already been captured in print. So what's involved in turning a book into a screenplay? Two of Australia's most distinguished screenwriters tell us how it's done.

Creating a movie masterpiece without alienating the fans of the book is no easy feat.

Jessica Alba walks out of her own film

January 27th 2010 12:50
In what is quite possibly the most innovative publicity stunt I've ever heard of, Hollywood star Jessica Alba left the premiere of her latest film The Killer Inside Me before the movie was even half over! It's a step up from her co-stars Kate Hudson and Casey Affleck, however: they didn't show up at all. Doesn't say much for the film... or does it?

It's the same old rumour that we've been hearing for years, and yet this time it's really gained momentum. Not only are the usual trashy magazines and websites crowing about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's rumoured separation: now, even so-called 'credible' news sites like smh.com.au are reporting that the hottest couple in Hollywood have split. Naturally, sources close to the couple have shot back at the rumours, declaring them "totally false". Maybe they are, maybe they're not. For me, the question is not: "Is it true?" or even "Why should we care?" - it's "Why are people so desperate for Brad and Angelina to be unhappy?"

Avatar claims a life

January 20th 2010 02:04
A Taiwanese man has died after watching the film Avatar, from a stroke doctors believe was triggered by the excitement of the 3D effects. The 42-year-old began to feel ill partway through the award-winning movie and was taken to hospital, where he died 11 days later.

Everyone loves a plothole

January 18th 2010 17:44
Okay, so that's not strictly true. In fact, it's not true at all. But in the same way that a journo will sometimes use a catchy title to lure people in (admit it, it works), Hollywood filmmakers will frequently overlook enormous plotholes in their movies, in order to have the story flow the way they want it to. And it's not just two-bit, second grade B-movies that do this. Oh no. Films like the Star Wars franchise, Harry Potter movies, Jurassic Park and the latest Star Trek all have gaping plotholes that could ruin the whole moviegoing experience for the staunchly logical among us.... but perhaps you need to ask yourself, when has Hollywood ever been about logic?

The mystery of Brittany Murphy's death

December 23rd 2009 00:04
The saddest Hollywood news this month has now become one of the most talked-about mysteries: how, and why, did Brittany Murphy die? While the 32-year-old actress's official cause of death was cardiac arrest, there are a number of theories as to what led to such a tragic end... and disturbingly, why Murphy's husband Simon Monjack didn't want an autopsy to be performed on his young wife.

... is none other than Hermione Granger, also known as the fabulous Emma Watson! The 19-year-old Briton's starring role in the six hugely popular Harry Potter films, as well as roles in smaller films like Ballet Shoes and as a voice in the animated movie The Tale Of Despereaux, helped rake in a stunning US$5.4 billion worldwide for the movie industry over the last ten years. And it seems that no-one is more surprised about this than Emma herself.

The star of this year's Julie and Julia is pregnant! It's a little sooner than what Amy Adams had planned, but according to reports she and her fiance Darren Legallo are thrilled with the news. The 35-year-old actress recently told journalists that she wanted a family but would be keeping it small: "I probably won't have a big family. I can barely manage my own life! But I do want to have a family."

The death of celebrity culture?

November 27th 2009 05:05
Is it possible that our obsession with celebrities may finally be on the wane? According to new reports, this is exactly what is happening: our society is experiencing "celebrity fatigue" and we've gotten to the point where we really just don't care anymore. Rather than following the ins and outs of what Lindsay, Angelina, Katie and all the rest of them are up to, as a group we're more likely to be interested in what's happening in our own lives.

... Will Ferrell, according to a new list published at business analysis site forbes.com. The Old School and Talladega Nights star commands a high salary for his work, even though he is almost always typecast in the "man-child" role... no, make that always! Ferrell beat several other big names for the dubious honour, including Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Australian-born star Naomi Watts has topped the forbes.com list of Best Actresses for the Buck. For every $1 Naomi is paid, she brings in $44 in box office earnings - not a bad rate for a Hollywood star! The 41-year-old beauty is probably best known for her roles in The Ring, Mulholland Drive and 2005's King Kong.

Who will be the next Catwoman?

September 24th 2009 23:36
Even though there isn't even a script in the works for the inevitable return of Batman's most enduring love interest, several actresses have already expressed their desire to play the role of Catwoman when she next features in the Batman movie series. First there was Angelina Jolie, then Ashley Judd, last month it was Megan Fox and now it's Charlize Theron. "I think what has happened to that franchise is amazing," Theron told journalists. "I would be an idiot to not consider that part."
