Hayden Panettiere: 'I was emotionally tortured'

When we see our favourite celebrities living the high life, making millions and becoming a part of Hollywood history, it's sometimes a shock to learn that their lives were not always so fabulous. Heroes star and environmental activist Hayden Panettiere has revealed to Details magazine that she was bullied and rejected by her peers in high school, mostly due to her burgeoning success as an actress.
"I was tortured, emotionally tortured by these girls," the 19-year-old confessed. "Every time I came back from filming, it would be me trying to find my way back into the clique. And they weren't having it."
The petite star has been acting since she was a baby, appearing in such films as Remember the Titans and Joe Somebody long before she became a household name, as well as modelling, singing and appearing in TV shows like Ally McBeal and Malcolm in the Middle. As such, her childhood was far from 'normal', though the actress claims that she's relieved about this: "I never felt I missed out – in fact, it was like, 'Oh, thank God I'm not like that.' "
As for handling the paparazzi, she's learned how to take their constant invasions in her stride: by not letting them get to her. "The more I react, the angrier I get, the more satisfaction [the detractors] get. That's exactly what they want," she says. "[But] I learned the game."
Hayden will next be appearing on the big screen in the title role of I Love You, Beth Cooper - ironically, playing the most popular girl in school.
