Harry Potter 8 anyone?

May 15th 2007 06:03
Well it would seem that J.K. Rowling is not quite set to abandon Harry Potter just yet. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, set for a July release soon after the June release of the fifth Harry Potter movie (J.K.'s 2007 paycheck is going to be a whopper!), is not going to be the last we see of the young wizard.
Rowling recently stated on her website that she would consider writing an eight Harry Potter book for charity... yeah, right, charity! Someone should really tell J.K. that we don't need excuses! It's okay to be devoted to your characters and your story. Aside from the usual contingent of right-wing conservative Christians just who is going to complain about the chance to read more Harry Potter.

The eigth volume of the chronicles of Harry is set to take a different road. It will feature a great deal of backstory cut from the original seven books, giving readers a greater grasp of the world of Harry and Hogwarts. J.K. Rowling has written two reference books in the past about the world of Harry Potter, including a guide to Quidditch and its History and an encylcopedic guide of the fanciful animals that populate the wizarding world.
Someone should suggest to J.K. the idea of some spin-off series focusing on other characters. Who wouldn't like to hear more about Snape or Dumbledore or Professor McGonagle? Maybe even some history of the villains would be worth a look? All right, so Snape is technically a villain (see "The Case for Snape's Guilt or Innocence" available and on the best seller charts in most good book stores) but I was thinking more of the Malfoy's.
Either way, the saga continues and that is all the matters.
Rowling, worth upwards of an estimated UK500 million Pounds or almost AU$1.2 billion, has revolutionised the world of literature. Unquestionably she is over-rated. She ain't no Hemmingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald. But she can writeup a storm and she gets bums on seats and thats what counts.

She may not be able to give up Harry Potter yet, but the fact is that the world of literature cannot afford to give up on her.
In short: keep writing damn you!

I'd always suspected she'd go past the 7th one... no one can give up wielding that much clout in the literary world and just give it up. No one can give up that much money, either.
