Hairspray, Teen Lust, Scientology - and all that jazz!

I do recall predicting that John Travolta would bring controversy to his upcoming feature, Hairspray, in which he hilariously (and controversially) dons a fat suit and drag!
Naturally Travolta's presence in the movie (and the dress!) adds to the already firmly established rumours of his closetted gayness. Simultaneously Gay Pride Militia leaders everywhere have brought out their chief schelayley sticks and begun a firm round of Scientology wacking... always fun!
You see Travolta is apparantly closetted (if he actually IS gay that is) because Scientology doesn't believe in being gay. No. It believes that Body Thetans (too complicated to explain here, just watch the South Park episode or Google it - all you need to know for now is Body Thetans are EVIL!!!!!) make you gay and that all is required is a good dose of Scientological therapy and a healthy serving of the word according to L. Ron Hubbard.
This at least is the gay Gospel according to Kevin Naff of Fag-Rag: The Washington Blade, who calls for a gay boycott of the movie-musical Hairspray in protest of what he calls "reparative clinics" where gay Scientologists are "cured"!
Does anyone else think this sounds a bit like the plot of X-Men 3?
Naturally the idea of such a boycott - a healthy dose of the movie's prospective audience will be gay it would seem (?!) - and the resulting slide in profits has horrified producers and other associates who stand to lose money or street cred if the film tanks. John Waters, who directed the original eighties absurdist-puff the movie-musical is based on, has popped up with this delicious quote in The New York Daily News...
"If [Travolta] was homophobic ... dancing in that fat suit with as many gay people as are working on this film, he would have had a heart attack and been dead."
A prominant gay Scientologist and a drug counsellor in West Hollywood Keith Relkin has also stated that a Scientology chaplain helped him come out while other publications have stated that L. Ron Hubbard later reversed his position on homosexuality. But then again, when you're spending most of your time on a yacht off the US coast stocked to the brim with underage Mexican boys you tend to have a lot of time to "re-think"!
In amidst the melee the Gay community seems to have forgotten something highly important. Hairspray does not "belong" to them!
While musicals are easily perceived as lying within the heartland of "Camp" territory these days it is vaguely insulting to assume that they are exclusive homosexual fare and whenever this sort of ridiculous claim is made the musical theatre industry around the world suffers as straight people consider it increasingly less "cool" to be associated with it.
Scientology is a disgrace to civilisation as a whole - true. But to attack it by calling for a boycott of a movie is just downright stu-pid!
Investigate, gather evidence, prosecute, fine.
What Kevin Naff has done will most likely damage the movie Hairspray at the box-office far more than the presence of Scientologists could ever have done as the movie is now officially GAY! As sad and as wrong as it may sound, that does not sell tickets!
If ever I meet Kevin Naff I will slap him accross the face with a wet fish of his choice!!! The dip-wad has just helped ruin a great movie before it has even been released.
In the meantime, Hairspray gets its Australian release on September 13 "And I am telling You" all now: GO AND SEE IT!!!!!! It's funny. It's heartfealt. It's clever... and it stars a lot of very sexy people (Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Effron, Brittany Snow, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley, James Marsden and Queen Latifah to name but a few)! Hairspray the movie musical lives!

Film & TV on DVD
I'm curious about this one just because I'm such a fan of John Waters original film. The soundtrack is great and the dancing was cool....seeing Johnny T Bird cut a rug in his wig and frock has me intrigued.
Great post.
