Fate, nudity and Rachel McAdams
August 12th 2009 09:04
We cried for her in The Notebook, loathed her in Mean Girls, laughed with her in Wedding Crashers and admired her tenacity in State of Play. Now, Rachel McAdams is starring alongside Aussie favourite Eric Bana in The Time Traveler's Wife, as the soulmate of a man with a rare genetic disorder that forces him to live on a different time continuum to the rest of society. It's an unusual role that suits the diversity of the character choices McAdams has made in her career so far, and it's expected to be yet another winner for the attractive 30-year-old.
"This film made me think about going back and seeing the people you love in a different time - like seeing my parents fall in love or seeing them as children. What fun that would be!" the Canadian-born actress said.
That being said, McAdams is a big believer in fate, so is ambivalent as to whether time travel would really be such a great thing. "There are things that I wouldn't want to know," the talented star told Parade magazine. "There is something comforting about it all being left to fate or circumstance. On the other hand, I just read a book about a group of women in their thirties writing to their younger selves. They gave themselves some really nice advice and I would appreciate that. I think my older, wiser self could tell me a few great things."
It seems that McAdams already has the wisdom she needs to succeed in the movie business. She's been working hard for years to make a name for herself, carefully selecting a diverse array of acting roles, and her efforts are finally paying off. She's now among the most sought-after young actresses in Hollywood, and was paid US$4 million for her role in The Time Traveler's Wife. And while she's yet to appear nude in a Hollywood film - though she did do a topless scene in the 2002 low-budget Italian flick My Name is Tanino - she says that nudity in films "shouldn't be a big deal - but it is."
"When you're playing a fictional character, it's as normal and mundane as eating breakfast," the star told Parade. "What bothers me is our culture's obsession with nudity. It shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. I think this overemphasis with nudity makes actors nervous. There's the worry about seeing one's body dissected, misrepresented, played and replayed on the Internet."
As for her future movie choices, McAdams has made the decision to go with the roles that really speak to her, and ditch the scripts that don't. "I'm trying to do things that make sense to me and things that I'm excited about. I think that if you are excited that comes across," she said.
"I definitely believe that you are drawn to certain things for inexplicable reasons, but in a very powerful way. I don't know what it is exactly, but I know that things happen kind of miraculously sometimes, and so I'm willing to believe that there's something pretty magical out there. I just couldn't tell you what it is."
The Time Traveler's Wife is expected to be in Aussie cinemas in early November, and McAdams will later be seen alongside Robert Downey Jnr in the highly anticipated feature film Sherlock Holmes.
