Facebook, the movie?
June 25th 2009 06:34
An Oscar-nominated filmmaker is in advanced negotiations with Columbia Pictures to make a movie based on the global phenomenon that is facebook. Specifically, the film is to follow the story of the social networking site's founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, as he goes from being a Harvard dropout to one of the world's youngest and wealthiest entrepreneurs.
The movie won't necessarily be great for Zuckerberg's image, however - apparently it's to be based on a new book called The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, in which the author Ben Mezrich takes a decidedly negative approach to Zuckerberg's success, labelling him "an obnoxious nerd" and supporting the allegations that Zuckerberg may have partially stolen the idea for facebook from his Harvard classmates.
Rumours are already circulating as to who will portray Zuckerberg, with lookalike actor Michael Cera, from Juno and Year One, tipped to be the most likely candidate for the role. "Obnoxious nerds are not the world's biggest box-office sell," reports website CNET News. "Cera could make the part a little bit more sympathetic."
The filmmakers involved are David Fincher, who was nominated for an Oscar for last year's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and writer Aaron Sorkin, best known for scripting Charlie Wilson's War and A Few Good Men. While it is not set in stone at this point as to whether the movie will be made, many say that it was only a matter of time before the movie studios grabbed onto the idea. The story of facebook's rise is a truly phenomenal one - with more than 200 million members worldwide, there is little doubt that a movie about the site's creator will be a commercial success.

I suppose that the name 'Facebook' (and its followers!) will make it a viable and commercially successful project.
