May 29th 2007 23:10
Dita Von Teese is a name which may be unknown to you, but that will not be the case for long. This model's international profile refuses to subside as so many model's do after their career reaches maximum exposure.
Von Teese, however, is no simple clothes horse out to conquer the fasion world. Here is a woman who by apearance and repute deserves the over-employed title of "icon".
With her movie star good looks, her super slim and yet somehow curvascious figure she manages to be sexy, sophisticated and even bizarre.
Her skin is almost unnaturally white. Her lips are always made up a particularly violent shade of red, both features contrastingly magnificently with her raven black hair.
Von Teese conjures up images of such women as Bettie Page - better still she is something akin to a gothic Marilyn Monroe, with a face that combines the haughty sexuality of Joan Cawford and the sophisticated elegance of Katharine Hepburn, yet she could not be convincingly associated with either.
Her main attraction is unquestionably her ability to make the unusual appealling. Indeed by openly flaunting her more unusual qualities she has managed to create a niche for herself that has yet to be successfully exploited by anyone else.
Von Teese was born Heather Rene Sweet and attributes a great deal of her iconic image to her mother's penchant for classic Hollywood movies. Betty Grable is amongst actresses noted as her favourite. She developed an interest in classical clothing and lingerie at a young age and studied costume design at University.
She became a stripper at the age of 19, and like all successful strippers she developed a gimmick which confused and attracted audience - a classical image which included elbow length gloves and a bee-hive hairstyle. Since then she has been a model of consistently increasing exposure.
Dita Von Teese is also credited as the Queen of the burlesque revival - a kind of latter day Gypsy Rose Lee who once again relied upon a classical Hollywood image to cause a stir. She appears on stage in various guises alongside props reminiscent of those used in the "glitter-and-be-gay" MGM musicals of the 1950's.
A giant compact, an oversized Carousel horse, a collosal champagne glass and a filigree heart are amongst some of the props she favours, while her feather fan dance (again, remeniscent of 40's burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee) is a noted favourite in her act.
She earned her new name thanks to a misprint in Playboy magazine.
Using her nickname Dita (after silent movie actress Dita Parlo) and selecting the name Von Treese from the phone book she gave it to Playboy as her "professional name" for her appearrance on the cover of a 2002 issue. The magazine mis-spelt the name as Von Teese and she decided to keep it.
Regardless of her bizarre image and her public attachment to the revolting Marilyn Manson (she filed for divorce in December 2006), Von Teese is now an image of the 21st century that seen once is hard to forget.
Despite her rise in the world of the strip joint and then burlesque, she has been accepted onto the pages of some of the worlds most pretigious fashion magazines and is unquestionably a fashion plate for the ages.
A combination of a beauty regimen beyond the conception of mere mortals and a business savvy that does her proud will no doubt ensure that Dita Von Teese is around for a great many years, a proud symbol of the retro-classic style and the personification of stylised glamour.
