Cate Blanchett says watching herself on screen is 'excruciating'

I'm yet to see a film in which Cate Blanchett is mediocre. And let's face it, there really aren't that many actors in Hollywood who you could say the same about! Despite this, the incredibly graceful Cate finds watching her own movies to be something of a painful experience, recently telling Parade magazine: "I find it excruciating to watch myself. It's sort of akin to watching your home videos, but doing it in public. There's always a moment where you feel like you've got your pants around your ankles."
Obviously Cate is her own worst critic: she not only has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she's also won a great number of prestigious awards, including an Oscar for her role in The Aviator and no less than four Golden Globes. She's currently on the big screen in the latest reincarnation of Robin Hood, in which she plays a gutsy Maid Marion opposite another huge Aussie star by the name of Russell Crowe.... an experience that she admits was not all smooth sailing.
"Russell is not always easy," Blanchett said. "His reputation both as an actor and as an intimidating presence precedes him. But he's always after making the best possible film. I'm not backward in coming forward, so we had some, shall I say, 'robust' conversations," she said, diplomatically.
As for the filming of Robin Hood, Blanchett said that the biggest challenge was trying to stay pretty while being rough and tough. "They expected me to look more gorgeous than my male co-stars, which isn't easy when you're doing action stuff!" the 41-year-old said. "I loved the horse riding, and the moment where Marion gets all chain-mailed up and rides off into battle. We had to ride these wild, wild ponies; some of them were really difficult to get on and none of them had saddles. We all galloped off and it was thrilling."
These days, Cate's power in Hollywood is so great that she can choose to be in just about whichever movie she pleases, but will always select the roles that prevent her from becoming stale. "Don't take a journey if you know you're going to be bored," she says wisely.
"I believe if you're going to do something, you should do it all the way. As far as being competitive, I think the only useful competition I've had is with myself."
The Ridley Scott-directed Robin Hood is in Australian cinemas now.
