Brittany Murphy's husband found dead: Update
May 24th 2010 09:06
The husband of Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy, who died in December last year, has reportedly been found dead at his home in Los Angeles. Simon Monjack, a British screenwriter who married Murphy in 2007, raised suspicion following his wife's death because of his initial refusal to have an autopsy performed on the 32-year-old's body. The death was later ruled an accident, with the Los Angeles County coroner stating that the primary cause of Murphy's death was pneumonia, with secondary factors of iron-deficiency anemia and multiple drug intoxication.
The cause of Monjack's death is unknown at this stage, with LA detectives currently investigating the scene. I'll give you an update as soon as more information is available.
Update
While the results of the autopsy are yet to be released, it seems that Monjack's death was due to a heart attack.
"[The death] appears to be natural," said the coroner's lead examiner Ed Winter. "There were some prescription drugs found that belonged to Mr. Monjack and will have an ongoing investigation. The cause of death is pending. We will have an autopsy in the next day or so. And pending toxicology, we will be releasing results once we get all those tests back."
Winter added that "there were no illicit drugs located, just prescription meds."
The similarities between the deaths of Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack are quite spooky: both were found unconscious in the same room by Brittany's mother, Sharon, who was the one to call the paramedics in both cases. Also considering that the pair were in their thirties (Murphy was 32, and Monjack 39 years old) it is unusual that two people so young could experience cardiac arrest, though clearly they were both suffering from a plethora of health problems. According to Monjack's spokesman, he was due for a heart bypass but had been putting it off, and had allegedly suffered a minor heart attack a week before his wife's death.
In January, Monjack's mother, Linda Monjack, told the media that her son was "unwell, and the doctors are carrying out tests. On whether he has a heart problem it is not really for me to say, you must ask him, but yes, there have been health problems in the past. I believe it's common knowledge, and it’s been in the press that he had a slight heart attack a week from Brittany's death coming back from Puerto Rico."
As for his state of mental health in the months following his wife's passing, he was described by Ed Winter as being "a despondent husband."
"He was never considered a suspect [in Murphy's death]," Winter said. "The family is devastated over his passing and, like I said, it is under investigation. I ask that you give the family some privacy from this point on."
