This is the furore that surrounded a musical which had not really been heard of outside of the US and had really not been done for an extensive period of time anywhere but in the odd High School since it had closed on Broadway in the late 1980's.
Imagine what happens then when one of the biggest cult musicals Broadway has ever seen takes to the silver screen?
When Tim Burton announced that he had acquired the rights to the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street he instantly set the ball rolling for an online-based obsession campaign that could only snowball wildly. It has.
While Johnny Depp first came to Hollywood as a guitarist in a band he was not what you would call the lead singer. And Sachca Baron Cohen is better known for the hip-hop-eratics of his other incarnation Ali-G. While some people may have heard of Helena Bonham Carter the actress, no one has heard of Helena Bonham Carter the singer!
That said, the movie has been made. It's done. It's being edited as we speak and apparantly Stephen Sondheim, the man who wrote the score (and whose standards are infamously high) is apparantly quite pleased with it... well that or he's due a slice of what look set to be titanic profits!
Sweeney Todd is already one of the most talked about movies of 2007 - and it's set for a release in January 2008! Oscar buzz is humming along for Tim Burton as director and Johnny Depp - who is certainly long overdue a Best Actor Oscar. By now he should be gearing up for his second!
Almost six months stand between Sweeney Todd and the rest of the world. And no one looks set to give anything away. I have to admit I am already more than a little excited.
