All Shrekked Out ***(Spoilers Contained Within!!!)***
May 20th 2007 06:31
Shrek the Third is set to open on screens accross Australia on June 7th, a full fortnight after its so far highly contraversial US debut.
It seems almost impossible to believe, but apparantly (brace yourselves), the third installment of the Shrek movies... well apparantly it sucks!
Whodathunkit?!
Critics and audience exit-polls have the film billed as easily the worst instalment of the series, which is beginning to look more and more likely to be confined to a trilogy given just how badly it has been received this time around.
Studio chiefs at Dreamworks were so concerned by the reported universality of the belief that the film stank that they began to talk down its chances at the box-office! Now is this or is this not the successor of two of the highest grossing animated movies of all time?
The successor yes, but whether it is worthy of the mantle of irreverant-brilliance as laid down in the first two classic installments does not even appear to be a matter for debate.
It just isn't worthy!
It seems the magic is over and the honeymoon is off. Lampooning time-honoured childrens fairy stories and Disney-esque classic conventions is apparantly no longer capable of being funny or original. It's no longer unexpected, prime-cut satire. Rather it's a re-hashed, tired, formulaic marketing exercise.
Frankly the jump has been so sudden between the two states of affairs that it seems a little hard to swallow. Indeed reviews read something like this...
"Shrek the Third has lost its way! Plot: (IT SUCKS!!!) The King is dying and Shrek doesn't want to be King. BORING!!! Fiona is pregnant and Shrek is nervous about being a father! WTF?!?!?! Prince Charming invades Far Far Away with all the evil fairy tale characters he can lay his hands on. OLD!!! Shrek meanwhile is off with Donkey and Puss-in-Boots trying to recruit the only other successor to the throne, a young Prince Arthur, who gives them no end of troubles because he doesn't want the crown either. STUPID!!! Prince Charming's coup d'etat is repulsed by Princess Fiona and a band of Princess/best-buds/ninjas. DULL DULL DULL!!!!! The wizard Merlin is lampooned by Eric Idle. SNORE!!! Larry King and Regis Philburn play the two Ugly Stepsisters. IT'S BEEN DONE!!! There is a moment of philosophical morality at the climax and then the rightful king (Shrek of course!) is crowned. WHORES!!!!! Then the whole cast gets together and sings a comic, off-the-wall version of a pop song. KILL ME NOW!!!"
Am I the only one noticing a pattern here?!
Clearly it seems a given that Shrek, an ogre, is not by fairy tale convention the heir designate for a throne. As is the first two films it seems that Shrek the Third plays off of the notion that appearrances can be deceiving. A.k.a. ogres are people too you know!
Apparantly this is no longer funny. It has not stopped audiences from seeing the film in droves in the US - where the film has generated what looks to be a record-breaking box-office opening-weekend haul (for an animated picture) of over US$130 million.
Are we becoming jaded? Or has the repetition of the same formula worn thin?
Stay tuned. In two weeks we find out.

If it's going to be the same thing voer again then I can safely say my brother and sister will like it, but I'll hate it.
I was hoping for an improvement, not a rehash.
Can't believe it's out already, I just found out now.

And the truth is, for 4 year olds, they don't categorise things as 'sucky'. The only indication I will get that it's anything less than the previous efforts of the amazing animators is a request for more popcorn before the movie finishes and a less than excited reaction when I present the DVD for Christmas or birthday gift. However, if Fiona makes it to the front of the DVD cover, then the reaction will be pure ecstaticism as what's inside will always be watcheable if the 'real woman's princess' is given air time!
long Live Shrek.
